When you start, it is recommended to have a few sessions within the first month. That helps us to establish a rapport, build trust and understanding and for me to come to know you and learn about your pressures, concerns and patterns of behaviour.
After this preliminary period, you are free to book as and when you feel you would like or need the sessions, subject to finding a mutually convenient time, of course.
Amongst my client base there is a good proportion of highly competent, busy people who are looking a different type of support. It turned out that some were not really seeking the deep reflection of psychotherapy, nor did they have the time to commit to this regularity. They were looking for someone with whom they could devise practical strategies to empower them. Our sessions naturally evolved to what I now offer as Shrink-to-fit Counselling and Coaching.
At first, I struggled with this need in terms of it not fitting into the conventional once-a-week (or more), regular format that therapy requires for good progress. I realised it was time to step back and look at this evolving need afresh.
I was being approached by an increasing number of people who were looking for a therapist that understood their personality, knew a certain amount about their background and their current life. They wanted this person to call on during times of need, vulnerability, particular stress, etc. But they were too busy to commit to same-time-each-week sessions. Their lifestyle was essentially functional and they wanted the flexibility of Book-As-You-Go Counselling or Coaching.
Shrink-to-Fit Coaching and Counselling was born and is proving flexible support for many professionals who want support in formulating effective strategies.
